Make Castle Grove your base when exploring and discovering the great history and culture of Donegal and the North West. The below list offers some highlights to consider, with the caveat being that there are many more things to enjoy in this part of the world.
Grianan Aileach, Burt, Co. Donegal
First built around 1700 BC, this ring fort is a fantastic relic of Ancient Gaelic Ireland. It is thought that St. Patrick visited the site in the 5th Century. This ancient stone structure is an awesome sight, standing 250m above sea-level. The views are also stunning – both of Lough Swilly and Lough Foyle (both having played a prominent role in Irish history).
Flight of the Earls (Rathmullan Heritage Centre), Rathmullan, Co. Donegal
Housed in an old gun battery on Lough Swilly, the Rathmullan Heritage Centre depicts the infamous events of September 1607, when Hugh O’Neill & Rory O’Donnell set sail in search of exile in Europe. In addition, Rathmullan is a beautiful sea-side village with wonderful beaches.
Glebe House & Gallery, Churchill, Co. Donegal
Set in woodland gardens near Letterkenny, Glebe House is a wonderful art gallery. It was the home of the famous landscape and portrait artist Derek Hill and it now houses his significant collection. Hill was a patron of Castle Grove, dining regularly and hosting guests. In fact one of his paintings can be found at Castle Grove – presented as a gift from the great artist himself.
Doe Castle, Sheephaven Bay, Cresslough, Co. Donegal
Built in the 16th Century, this castle played a prominent role in Irish history. Home to the Clan Mac Suibhne, it was a key site during the Nine Years War. In 1588, the then Chieftain, Eoghan Og gave refuge in the castle to the shipwrecked survivors of the Spanish Armada and as a result was given special mention in the Annals of the Four Masters (a medieval Irish chronicle). The family lost control of the castle in 1691 following the Siege of Limerick.
